India coach Gary Kirsten today said that player-of-the-tournament Yuvraj Singh was a focused and fitter cricketer after making his comeback in the team and was determined to become the best fielder in the just-concluded World Cup.

"Around 7-8 months ago he lost his place in the Test squad. He made some personal decisions and spent a lot of time doing a one-on-one with (team's mental conditioning coach) Paddy Upton. I got a sense 6 months ago that he was moving into a new space as a person and a cricketer," Kirsten told reporters here during his farewell press conference.

"I could not believe how focused he was when he came back to the World Cup squad. He was prepared, fitter and worked a lot on his bowling. Most impressive was the fact that he wanted to be the best fielder in the World Cup," the South African said about the Punjab all-rounder, who made 369 runs and picked up 15 wickets in the tournament.

Kirsten said Yuvraj's presence, along with young Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli, inside the 30-yard circle gave a sharp edge to India's fielding and helped the team lift the World Cup for the second time after 28 years.

"With him, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli in the ring made a massive difference to the team. For Yuvi to end up as the man-of-the-tournament, I am extremely proud of him," he said.

Sachin Tendulkar has done more than anyone for Indian cricket to deserve a World Cup victory

Cricket World Cup Final 2011: India (277-4) beat Sri Lanka (274-6) by six wickets

India owed their second World Cup to their magnificent batsmen. Their two finest – Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag – did not score 20 between them, yet the remaining Indian batsmen knocked off the runs with six wickets and ten balls to spare in the highest successful run-chase that any of the ten cup finals has seen.

The weight of expectation on India was enormous – from the outset of this tournament they have been the favourites – but they followed the example of their captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in withstanding it. If Brazil win a football World Cup at home, they will have a small and silent fan-base compared to the Indian cricket team last evening and their 1.2 billion home supporters.

Sri Lanka were handicapped by dew when they bowled towards the end of India’s innings, and by the absence through injury of their brilliant young batting-allrounder Angelo Mathews, which precipitated four changes to their semi-final team that rather weakened their bowling. Even so, for India to chase down 275 with quite a lot in hand was a superlative effort.

The first time that India won the World Cup, in 1983, their players were given plots of land by the government and practically deified.

When India won the inaugural World Twenty20, their team bus was brought to a standstill by millions – literally – thronging Marine Drive, outside the Wankhede stadium where they won last night. But these will be minor celebrations by comparison with winning this World Cup on home soil.

India’s joy made for a sad last international match for Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, not to mention for Mahela Jayawardene. The latter scored a century of almost sublime beauty, only to see it outweighed by Gautam Gambhir and Dhoni in their partnership of 109.

It was the sixth century in a World Cup final, but the first for a losing side.

Muralitharan began auspiciously, fizzing the ball up into his left hand as he started his run-up, scrambling the seam and maybe the batsman’s senses too. But after bowling his first four overs for ten runs, the magic and fizz began to fade. When he dropped short, Dhoni’s square-cut almost gave the ball whiplash.

Dhoni had made few runs before in this World Cup – the only sign that the unrelenting demands were having some effect – but he was superb all round yesterday in every way, except for presiding over such a slow over-rate that Sri Lanka’s innings took more than four hours.

For in addition to marshalling the run-chase, he had to overcome the disappointment of apparently winning the toss, only to be told to do it again and losing it. Lesser personalities would have been flustered, but not Dhoni.

Then shortly after the controversial toss, it became apparent that he had a serious problem, called Sreesanth. The low-trajectory and highly-strung medium-pacer had been taken apart by Bangladesh, of all countries, in the opening game of the World Cup and had not played since.

Fairly predictably, two of Sreesanth’s allotment of overs had to be bowled by someone else: Tendulkar, which brought the house down, or maybe this home-town stadium should be called his temple. Dhoni’s resourcefulness was further tested when Yuvraj Singh’s left-arm spin was initially expensive, so that suddenly he only had three specialist and reliable bowlers.

Sri Lanka were never going to be bowled out, but Dhoni stopped them running away with it, and India took key wickets when Sangakkara edged a cut, and Samaraweera was leg-before after a review, and Kapugedera was suckered by Zaheer’s slower ball.

But Jayawardene is not only the most beautiful righthanded batsman of his age, he is also one of the most effective. A well-balanced batsman can clip through mid-wicket; Jayarwadene not only clips the ball but polishes it too. Old-timers deplore the disappearance of the late-cut, but in Jayawardene’s hands the stroke is not extinct: even on a slow pitch he still beat third man.

His big match temperament should not be underestimated either. Even when he was playing Under-13 inter-school cricket, Jayawardene is said to have attracted hundreds if not thousands of spectators to watch him bat.

The combination of inner strength and skill allowed him to score at a run a ball without any high risk, before launching the final assault with wickets in hand.

Sri Lanka left their batting powerplay for their last five overs and hit 63 runs. When Jayawardene raced to his 100, the press box burst into applause, a rare breach of convention but one that was to be repeated soon, in praise of Dhoni. Before then Jayawardene’s reward was to sit back and watch powerful lefthanded slogs that brought 22 from the nine balls that Thisara Perera faced.

It was Gambhir who brought India’s run-chase alive after Malinga’s opening attack had India reeling. He has lived in the shadow of Tendulkar and Sehwag but at the crucial moment he burst forth with 97 from only 122 balls, attacking the pace and spin bowlers with equal flourish – except that it was against Dilshan’s offspin that the crucial moment came and Gambhir, on 30, was dropped at long-off by Nuwan Kulasekara diving forwards.

Gambhir brought India back into the game in the company of Virat Kohli, then began to take it away from Sri Lanka in his stand with Dhoni.

Run-chases of any size had been insuperable before in World Cup finals, but in the age of fitness training and 20-over cricket, batsmen can score quickly as well as bat for a long period.

Sri Lanka, having had the strongest bowling attack at the semi-final stage, rather went backwards by including two moderate medium-pacers instead of two specialist spinners, Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis. Malinga and Muralitharan, at least until Dhoni got after him, held some threat, but the rest were pulped.

Dhoni rounded the final off, and unleashed the fireworks, with a shot worthy of the occasion – a pull-drive that sent the ball over wide mid-on and into the admiring hordes. He was rightly the man of the match, for what he had been through and yet come out triumphantly.

It was also a great night for Tendulkar, who did not make his 100th international hundred but who was carried around the outfield at the finish on the shoulders of his adoring teammates. ‘The proudest moment of my life,’ Tendulkar called it, after a career that has given no cricketer since Don Bradman more cause for pride.

Twenty-eight years after Kapil's Devils brought the cup home, another generation - Dhoni's Daredevils - have done it again. Yuvraj Singh has been selected as the Player of the Tournament, while MS Dhoni has won Man of the Match.

This innings began with heartbreak. Much drama later it has ended with tears of joy. MS Dhoni played a Captain's knock just when all of India needed one from him. India's arguably most successful Captain ever has brought in another prize.

MS Dhoni has completed 6000 runs in one day internationals. Indubitably, he would count the runs he has scored today as some of the most important of those. He walked in with India in a pressure situation, with all of India demanding a captain's knock, and acutely aware that he had not performed at all with the bat in the World Cup 2011.

Along with partner Gautam Gambhir, the skipper kept the score ticking after the departure of Virat Kohli, brilliantly caught and bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan for 35 when India were 114. But, there was heartbreak when Gambhir departed for 97, a mature knock that came when needed most. He was bowled by Thisara Perera and India were 223 for 4. Yuvraj Singh, who has scripted several India wins in this tournament, is out to bat.

Kohli's was the third Indian wicket to fall and Dhoni came in to bat ahead of Yuvraj Singh keeping a right-left batting combination going, put his head down to play responsibly with left-handed Gambhir, who got his fourth 50 of the tournament.

The two have took India's score across the 200 mark and not only managed to keep adding to the score with some great shots, but also put the Lankan fielders to test, forcing them to make mistakes and allow the extra run.

Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara has constantly experimented with changes in bowling, but even the mighty Muttiah Muralitharan, playing his last international match and fairly economical, has failed to make a dent.

The India innings began with a deafening silence. And if the roaring stadium went quiet when Virender Sehwag fell LBW second ball to Lasith Malinga, it was fairly funereal when local boy Sachin Tendulkar was out after scoring an exquisite 18 runs. Sachin edged one to skipper-wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara. Strike two for Lasith Malinga.

Every eye was on the board that asked for 275 to win. In the stands, the drooping shoulders of the legendary Rajinikanth said it all. Or then, the sad slump of Nita Ambani.

Then, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli, stitched together a partnership of runs, with Gambhir completing his 50 in a pressure situation. He got a lifeline at 30 when Nuwan Kulasekara failed to reach the ball at long off. Incidentally, the 100th dropped catch of the tournament. He also survived a run out scare. Gambhir has also now completed 4000 runs in ODIs.

1st Innings

The Lanka batsmen built their innings steadily and with precision to finish at 274 for 6. The slog overs brought a flawless century from Mahela Jayawardena, and some fireworks from Nuwan Kulasekara and Thisara Perera. They also brought a spot of drama when Kulasekara was left stranded mid-field and a direct hit from skipper Dhoni brought the bails off. Scoring a six off the last ball of their innings, Lanka set a target that seems challenging from here.

It doesn't get bigger than this. Thirty-seven-year-old champion batsman and local boy Sachin Tendulkar ran full steam and flung himself to the ground to stop a ball from crossing the tape. The crowd roared. Watching from the stands among a host of celebs is the legendary Rajinikanth.

Zaheer Khan began his first spell with an inspired three maidens and gave away just six runs in five overs. Those stellar figures, however, were negated in his last five overs when he was hit for 54 runs. Zaheer Khan picked up two Lankan wickets as did Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh took one. With the wicket of Chamara Kapugedera, Zaheer took his 21st wicket in the tournament to become the joint highest wicket-taker along with Shahid Afridi.

India had got an early breakthrough breaking up the tournament's most successful opening pair when a seventh-over Zaheer Khan delivery found the outside edge of Upul Tharanga's bat. Virender Sehwag completed a diving catch at the first slip. Wickets came at regular intervals thereafter, but Mahela Jayawardane held on, scripting a good Lankan score.

The final in Mumbai on Saturday is the first time two Asian nations meet in a cricket World Cup final and it will see a straight contest between the world's best batsman and best bowler of all time - Sachin Tendulkar (18,093 ODI runs) versus Muttiah Muralitharan (534 ODI wickets). Sachin Tendulkar’s chancy 85 powered India to 260-9 against a Pakistan side which seemed overwhelmed by the hype built around Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final and the ‘cricket diplomacy’ surrounding it.

Playing in his sixth World Cup, Tendulkar had an lbw decision overturned on appeal, was dropped by Misbah-ul-Haq, Younus Khan and Umar Akmal, while stumper Kamran Akmal also missed a half-chance.

Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi, also the hapless bowler on three of those four occasions, could only hold his head in dismay as his team mates squandered opportunity after opportunity to cut short Tendulkar’s 115-ball stay that had 11 fours in it.

On a belter of a wicket at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had little hesitation in opting to bat first and he must have felt vindicated when Virender Sehwag (38) tore into the Pakistani attack.

The right-hander smashed five fours to milk 21 runs off Umar Gul’s second over, thus blunting Pakistan’s pace spearhead but India could not make the most of the flying start.

Wahab Riaz (5-46) trapped the opener leg before in the sixth over to end the 48-run opening stand and soon the boundary flow dried up.

The 68-run second wicket partnership between Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir (27) consolidated India’s position but it was not without toil.

Mohammad Hafeez ended the blossoming partnership by removing Gambhir and Riaz returned to claim Virat Kohli (9) and the in-form Yuvraj Singh with successive deliveries to reduce the co-hosts, cruising merrily at 116-1 at one stage, to 141-4.

Suresh Raina’s (36 not out) middle order cameo took India past the 250-mark.

India could have been in a bigger hole but Misbah dropped Tendulkar at mid-wicket, Younus grassed one at cover and Umar Akmal showed the same sloppiness, spilling one at mid-wicket.

Earlier in his innings, Tendulkar used a review to successfully overturn an lbw decision that had gone against him.

Just when it seemed nothing can stop the 37-year-old prolific run-getter from scoring his 100th international century, Afridi caught the Indian off Saeed Ajmal’s bowling, keeping his pre-match promise to deny Tendulkar the milestone.

India frittered away their assertive beginning at the semifinal match today afternoon by losing five batsmen -- the last to go was Sachin Tendulkar -- in the crucial World Cup semifinal match being played at Mohali.

Tendulkar surived four dropped catches before finally being caught by Shahid Afridi off a Saeed Ajmal delivery for 85.

His charmed life began much earlier when he survived two scares in Saeed Ajmal's second over. On one delivery, umpire Ian Gould raised the finger after a leg-before appeal. The Indians decided to use up their last review and the third umpire judged Tendulkar not out as the ball was going down the leg side. Tendulkar survived the next ball too, an appeal for stumping. Only one frame showed that his leg was inside the crease when Kamran Akmal had removed the bails. Tendulkar was then dropped four times -- on 27, 45, 70 and 82!

Wahab Riaz dismissed Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh off successive balls to place India at 141/4 in 25.3 overs in their World Cup semifinal clash at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Wednesday.
Riaz first had Virat caught by Umar Akmal at backward point and on the next delivery, clean bowled the in-from Yuvraj with a superb reverse swinging yorker.

Pakistani fielders dropped Sachin Tendulkar twice and he made them pay by hitting his 95th ODI half-century.

Tendulkar was first dropped by Misbah-ul-Haq at mid-wicket when he was on 27 and a few overs later Younis Khan dropped a simple catch at mid-off when Tendulkar was at 45. The unlucky bowler at both times was Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi.

India lost their second wicket when Mohammad Hafeez had Gautam Gambhir stumped by Kamran Akmal.

Sachin Tendulkar and Gambhir brought up the Indian 100 in the 16th over.

Tendulkar took India to 73/1 in 10 overs after the dismissal of Virender Sehwag.

Tendulkar survived two close calls in Saeed Ajmal's second over. On the fourth delivery, the ball hit Tendulkar on the pads, the Pakistani players appealed and umpire Ian Gould raised his finger. Tendulkar opted for the review and the replays showed that the ball was going down the leg side. The decision was overturned.

On the next delivery, Tendulkar missed the doosra while playing a front foot shot and Kamran Akmal took off the bails in a flash. Square leg umpire Simon Taufel went for the third umpire and the replays showed that Tendulkar had brought his right foot down in the crease just in time.

Wahab Riaz trapped Sehwag plumb in front of the wicket after India got off to a fiery start.

Sehwag hit 9 fours in his 25-ball 38 and his onslaught started when he hit five fours off Umar Gul's second over as India got off to a flying start.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat as India made one change to the side that beat Australia in the quarterfinals, bringing in pacer Ashish Nehra in place of spinner R Ashwin.

Pakistan have made no change to the team that beat the West Indies in the quarterfinals, deciding against including mercurial pacer Shoaib Akhtar despite widespread speculation before the match.

Yuvraj Singh admits he has fulfilled a dream after his man-of-the-match-winning 57 not out saw India beat champions Australia by five wickets in the World Cup quarter-finals.

India, chasing 261 for victory, were faltering badly at 187 for five when skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was out.

But Yuvraj and fellow left-hander Suresh Raina (34 not out) delighted frenzied fans in a 42,000 capacity Sardar Patel Stadium crowd with an unbroken stand of 74 that saw the co-hosts triumph.

The victory sets up a semi-final with arch-rivals Pakistan in Mohali on March 30.

Yuvraj, who joked it was the first time he had been applauded at a press conference, was asked if everything he was touching was now turning to gold.

"I think so. Last year, whatever I was doing was turning into mud," he said.

"I have been thinking about beating Australia in this World Cup for one year, that I would be there till the end and winning the game for India.

"I honestly thought about this 365 days of the year. I have been dreaming of this. Probably because Australia are three-time (successive) champions," explained Yuvraj.

The 29-year-old's fourth 50 in six innings, also including a hundred, took his average at this World Cup to an astonishing 113.66.

It also represented a remarkable turnaround after he'd not that long ago found himself out of the side, struggling for fitness and runs.

"This is a moment we live for," added Yuvraj, who mysteriously said he was playing this tournament for a "special person".

But he would only reveal the identity if India, bidding for a second World Cup title to add to their 1983 triumph, made it to the final.

In order to do that they must first beat arch-rivals Pakistan, who thrashed the West Indies by 10 wickets in their last eight clash in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Sachin Tendulkar could become the first man to hit 100 international hundreds on Sunday.

If Bangladesh had won on Saturday, England’s fans would have been praying for Tendulkar to score another century against West Indies to knock them out. As it is, only a billion Indians will be spurring him on.

Almost every Indian more than a few years old will know about Tendulkar. Has any sportsman ever been followed by so many people with so much adulation? It is Tendulkar’s withstanding of this weight of expectation, and his consistency over more than two decades, that sets him apart from all other cricketers.

In the Indian team, three other batsmen — Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman — have played more match-winning, series-turning innings than Tendulkar. But they have only had bowlers and fielders to contend with, not the scrutiny of the world’s second-most populous nation.

When Tendulkar reached 49 Test centuries last year, the scrutiny was too much, and he had a relatively poor home series against New Zealand. He had to go abroad, to South Africa, to achieve his 50th. Now he has 51 Test centuries, and 48 in one-day internationals, after scoring two in this World Cup, against England and South Africa.

As India are assured of their place in the quarter-finals, there will be less pressure on Tendulkar in their last qualifying game than there will be in the knock-out stages.
Indeed it would help India if Tendulkar reached his landmark straight away, because a match stops — or at least India’s scoring rate slows — when he reaches the 90s, and works his way through them in ones and twos.

In any event, whether he scores his 100th hundred in this World Cup, or maybe in England this summer, it will be one of the few statistical achievements worth celebrating — because Tendulkar has raised the bar so high.

Five or ten years ago Tendulkar could not be hailed unequivocally as the greatest batsman of the moment: Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting, jostled for that title. But he can be now. At 37, he blends the boldness of his youth with all his experiences.

Above all, Tendulkar has the finest cricket brain. Everything that is useful to his batting, he notes. This is not only apparent when he bats: even though he can’t really bowl, when he does so he bowls exactly what is right for the circumstances. Not the greatest talent that the sport of cricket has seen, perhaps, but surely the finest mind that has ever been applied to it.

Former Sri Lanka captain Aravinda de Silva believes that if Pakistan play consistently then the 1992 champions can go on to win World Cup-2011.

Legendary Test batsman de Silva said on Thursday that Pakistan has the firepower to go all the way in the 14-nation tournament.

"I think Pakistan are capable of winning the World Cup," said de Silva, who was one of the architects of Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup triumph.

"Their team has some good players but what Pakistan needs is to have more consistency in their game. I think if they can do that then they will have a very good chance of winning the title," he added.

De Silva, who scored 6,361 runs from 93 Tests and also amassed 9,284 runs from 308 One-day Internationals during an illustrious international career, stressed that there are no favourites in the World Cup.

"The results that we have seen so far in this tournament have made it clear that there are no favourites to win the World Cup.

"Any team that peaks at the right time and gives its best when it matters is going to win the title," said de Silva, who was Man of the Match of the 1996 World Cup final.

De Silva believes that a number of exciting matches in this tournament have proved that there is no danger to the one-day format.

"We have seen some really exciting matches in this World Cup and it's apparent that cricket fans are really enjoying this competition. It also shows that the one-day format is still very popular," he said

Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones feels that for Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, winning the World Cup will remain a dream.

In his column in The Age, Jones pointed out that history is very important to cricketers.

"It tells us what we did wrong and what we did right in the past. There have been nine World Cups and those World Cup champion teams do not lie about the composition and skills required to win," he said.

"The three main common denominators consistent with all World Cup champion teams are: Your top four batsmen must be of a high quality. They must have the technique to play the new ball, as well as have the power and stroke play during Powerplays. They also must have the fitness to bat through the whole 50 overs. Your top four bowlers must be of high quality, able to absorb pressure and bowl defensively in Powerplays. If you can't field, don't bother turning up!" he said.

"All this taken into account, I do not believe India will win the World Cup with its current form. Everyone here has a huge regard for the Indian team. They have the batsmen, no doubt. Tendulkar and Sehwag can rip any attack to shreds. But that alone doesn't win the World Cup," he said.

Jones said that Dhoni's bowling line-up comprising Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh doesn't look as good as any of the line-ups of the previous teams.

"Dhoni wants seven specialist batsmen and four specialist bowlers. Having seven batsmen tells me that India doesn't trust its 'engine room' to make the runs required. By having four bowlers, it means that everything must go right or they are in deep trouble. What happens if one is injured? Or one gets smashed," he asked.

"India have struggled to bowl out Bangladesh and England. Ireland troubled them, but Dhoni won't budge. India's main weakness is the form of Chawla and Harbhajan. Chawla is being smashed and was brought in by the strong backing of Dhoni after two years in obscurity. There are three leg-spinners who have won World Cups: Mushtaq, Warne and Brad Hogg. Is Chawla as good as those three? No, he isn't," he said.

Jones also said that Harbhajan's form is also an added worry for Dhoni.

"Harbhajan has struggled in all World Cups and has only taken six wickets in eight matches against the Test countries at an average of 58. His 10 overs are going for around 50," he said.

"The team needs the attitude to get wickets and not just defend. Getting wickets always stops the run-rate. Its fieldsmen must look for run-outs and want the ball in the field."

Brendon McCullum's century helped New Zealand defeat Canada to reach the Cricket World Cup quarterfinals.

Australia and New Zealand are both through to the quarterfinals of the Cricket World Cup after comfortable Group A victories over minnows Kenya and Canada on Sunday.

Defending champions Australia secured their place in the last eight courtesy of a 60-run win over Kenya in Bangalore.

Michael Clarke (93), Brad Haddin (65) and Michael Hussey (54) were all in good form as Australia reached 324-6 in their 50 overs.

The African nation, who had lost their previous four matches, never looked like reaching that target, but were not disgraced in making 264-6, the highest score they have achieved in the competition so far, thanks to an unbeaten 98 from Collins Obuya.

Meanwhile, New Zealand proved far too good for Canada in Mumbai, easing to a 97-run win to go top of the table.

Opener Brendon McCullum blitzed an impressive 101 to help the Black Caps to a thumping score of 358-6.

Canada, who had beaten Kenya earlier in the competition, managed to reach a respectable 261-9 thanks to a knock of 84 from captain Ashish Bagai.

Those results mean New Zealand (eight points), Sri Lanka (7) and Australia (7) are all through to the next stage.

Sachin Tendulkar's 99th international century put India on course for a huge total against South Africa in Nagpur, before the co-hosts lost nine wickets for just 29 runs in an astonishing collapse.

Tendulkar compiled 111 off 101 balls to register his sixth World Cup century in the Group B match, but only Virender Sehwag (73) and Gautam Gambhir (69) supported him, Dale Steyn finishing with 5-50 as the Proteas rampaged through the middle and lower order.

Having won the toss on a flat wicket, India dominated from the outset, with Tendulkar and Sehwag building a 142-run opening stand in quick time.

At one stage a total approaching 400 seemed likely but remarkably India found themselves bowled out with eight deliveries left.

As well as Steyn's lethal spell, spinner Robin Peterson took two for 52 after recovering from a poor start.

Tendulkar and Sehwag raced through the mandatory powerplay to put on 87 runs as the latter brought up his 50 with a four off Peterson and gave similar treatment to JP Duminy's first delivery.

Tendulkar took just 33 balls to reach his 94th ODI half-century while at the other end, Sehwag continued to power his way through, dealing mostly in boundaries.

South Africa finally got a breakthrough in the 17th over, when after surviving a dropped caught-behind chance off Johan Botha, Sehwag played a quick delivery from Francois du Plessis on to his stumps.

Gambhir helped India keep momentum as the total crossed 200 in just 31 overs. Then a single off Morne Morkel brought Tendulkar his 48th ODI century to rapturous applause while Gambhir reached his 50 from the very next delivery.

Respite soon came South Africa's way as the 125-run second-wicket stand ended with Tendulkar caught out off a wild slog, while Steyn dispatched both Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan in the same over.

India had endured a disappointing batting powerplay - scoring just 30 for the loss of four wickets - while the last five batsmen could only add 13 to the total leaving skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni unbeaten on 12.

Electing to bat first, the Dutch openers got off to a cautious start before Piyush Chawla, preferred over Ashwin, struck in the 16th over. Opener Eric Swarczynski failed to read the wrong one outside the off-stump - which went on to crash onto his stumps. The ball had sneaked in before batsman brought his bat down. Chawla repaid Dhoni's faith early.

Pieter Seelaar was over the moon after getting rid of both Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in quick succession. In the 8th over, Seelaar dismissed Sehwag when he tried to go over the point region. In his next over, Pieter got Tendulkar to silence the buzzing crowd. Three balls later he sent Yusuf packing for his third wicket.

Openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag got India off to a cracker chasing 190 runs at Kotla. The dynamic duo added 69 runs in 7.3 overs to make the crowd go wild before Seelaar stole the show. Sachin (27) meanwhile became the first batsman to score 2000 runs in World Cups.

A half-century by Yuvraj Singh helped India beat the Netherlands by five wickets today in the Cricket World Cup to increase its lead in Group B.

The Dutch, who won the toss, were all out for 189 in 46.4 overs in New Delhi, Yuvraj taking two wickets. India put on a stuttering batting display in reaching 191-5.

“I don’t mind chasing or batting first as long we are winning,” India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said at the post- match ceremony. “We achieved quite a few objectives but there are still some areas we need to improve, like the powerplay overs.”

Netherlands captain Peter Borren was the top scorer for his side with 38 in 36 balls. Four other Dutch players had scores in the 20s.

India got to 69-0 before losing three wickets for 13 runs, all of them to Pieter Seelaar. One of the trio, Sachin Tendulkar, was out for 27 after becoming the first batsman to score 2,000 Cricket World Cup runs.

Yuvraj, with 51 runs, and Dhoni, on 19, saw India to victory in 36.3 of its 50 overs, Yuvraj hitting the winning runs with a boundary. Opener Virender Sehwag made 39, and Seelaar finished on 3-53.

Today’s loss means the Dutch have never beaten a Test- playing nation in 18 World Cup matches.

India now has seven points and England five, with West Indies and South Africa on four. Ireland and Bangladesh have two points and the Netherlands none after four defeats.

Group Standings

New Zealand and Pakistan lead Group A on six points, with Sri Lanka and Australia on five. Zimbabwe and Canada have two and Kenya has none. Tomorrow, Sri Lanka plays Zimbabwe in Kandy.

India next plays South Africa in Nagpur on March 12. The Netherlands meets Bangladesh in Chittagong two days later.

Winning the seven-team group would mean co-host India faces the fourth-place finisher from Group A in the quarterfinals. The top four teams from each of the pools advance to the last eight after a round-robin competition

Birthday boy Ross Taylor smashed a whirlwind unbeaten century to set up an emphatic 110-run win for New Zealand against Pakistan in their group A match here today.

Taylor, who turned 27th today, cracked a breath-taking 131 runs off 124 balls to take New Zealand to a challenging 302 for seven after surviving two chances early in his innings at Pallekele stadium here.

Taylor hit eight fours and seven massive sixes in his innings and in the company of Jacob Oram piled up a mammoth 114 runs in the final six overs after skipper Daniel Vettori won the toss and elected to bat.

Fast bowlers Tim Southee and Kyle Mills then ran through the Pakistan batting lineup, reducing the Asian Gaints to 45 for five in 14.4 overs, before dismissing them for 192 with 8.2 overs to spare to reach top of the Group A table.

New Zealand will next play Canada and Sri Lanka in the last two league matches in Group A here.

Chasing 303 to win, Pakistan had a disastrous start when Southee trapped Mohammad Hafeez (5) in front of wicket in the second over. Mills then repeated the treatment to Ahmed Shehzad (10) as Pakistan slipped to 23-2 in 6.1 overs.

Mills soon sent Younis Khan's (0) offstump for a walk, while Southee induced an edge off Kamran Akmal (8) to further break their back. After few overs, Misbah-ul-Haq (7) became a victim of Southee as Pakistan were looking down the barrel at 45-5 in the 15th over.

Skipper Shahid Afridi (17) then wielded his willow for a couple of fours and a six before falling prey to Jacob Oram in the 18th over.

Umar Akmal then hit a 58-ball 38 with the help of three fours and added 36 runs with Abdul Razzaq before holing out to Oram at deep midwicket off Nathan McCullum.

Razzaq fought hard for his 74-ball 62 and became only the fourth all-rounder in world cricket to score 5000 runs, beside taking 250 runs in one-day Internationals.

He and Umar Gul (34 not out) provided some late entertainment, adding 66 runs off 51 balls for the ninth wicket but it was too little too late in the end.

Earlier, Taylor made Pakistan pay heavily for dropping him on zero. Adopting a cautious approach in the beginning, Taylor, who survived two chances, exploded in the final stages of the innings and remained unbeaten on 131 runs that came off just 124 balls.

Utilising most of the opportunity, he showed scant respect to the Pakistani bowlers and struck as many as eight fours and seven sixes during his fiery innings.

Nathan McCullum (19 off 10) and Jacob Oram (25 off 9) scored briskly and gave perfect support to Taylor towards the end, while Martin Guptill came up with a gritty 86-ball 57 upfront to lay the foundation for the score.

Ireland have vowed to continue with the same aggressive approach which stunned England on Wednesday in Sunday's World Cup match against India in Bangalore.

The Irish sensationally beat England by three wickets and all-rounder John Mooney performed a heroic late innings in the win.

"Our expectations going into the India game will be the same and we will go all out," said Mooney.

"Every game we play, we play to win. The approach will be the same."

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera were batting on 73 and 34 respectively then.

A brilliant 158 from Andrew Strauss saw England tie an extraordinary World Cup group match against India in Bangalore. Strauss along with Ian Bell put England in command with a 170-run second-wicket stand, before Zaheer Khan dismissed both batsmen in successive balls. England needed 14 from the last over, but fell one run short of victory needing two off the final ball.

Earlier, India scored a mammoth 338 with the help of Tendulkar's 120-run knock which came off 115 balls (5 sixes and 10 fours). Tendulkar hit his 47th century off 103 balls as India crossed the 200-run mark in the 35th over. This is Tendulkar's fifth World Cup century - the most by any player in the world.

This was just the fourth tied game in World Cup history.
